OUR MISSION
Carolina Cupboard will provide food assistance to individuals of the Carolina community be they student, staff, or faculty by acquiring and distributing food to those in need on this campus. The purpose of Carolina Cupboard is multidimensional in that it seeks to provide hunger-relief as well as educating, empowering, and engaging the surrounding community on issues related to food insecurity, poverty, and health & nutrition.
WHY?
The need for this organization comes at a time when individuals in our very own community are burdened by personal economic strife thus contributing to students experiencing food insecurities. Over the past year, we have heard numerous anecdotal stories from people expressing how at times they've went without food because of extenuating circumstances - greatly affecting their academics. Even more so, a great deal of the staff that work for this university are below the poverty level – and these are some of the most hard working individuals on UNC’s campus. They are priceless gems of this university just as much as students. Through this food pantry initiative, we hope to ensure that those in our community that are experiencing food poverty and insecurities will have one less burden to carry.
HELP US
As Tar Heels, in a sense we are a family. And as a family, we shouldn’t overlook and neglect those that need help. One way that we believe this university can extend its reach in providing more assistance to students and eventually staff is through this program.
HOW DO I RECEIVE FOOD?
To receive food from the food pantry please click the "How to use the Pantry" button below and follow the instructions on the form. If you have any difficulties please contact us through our contact form or visit us directly at the food pantry in Avery.
HOW TO HELP?
Without volunteers, Carolina Cupboard will not be able to effectively provide food to the people in need in our community. As a food pantry, we will rely heavily on volunteers and donations. There are many ways that people in and outside of the Carolina community can help support CC in our mission to fight food poverty.
Below are our current opportunities:
Food Sorts: Food sorting, packaging, and distribution at the food pantry are the best ways to volunteer. These activities are perfect for individuals or groups.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities: We need volunteers to help with everything from data entry to educating about nutrition. If you can commit to ongoing support at the food pantry, please fill out the volunteer form by clicking the "Join Us" button.
Host a Food Drive: Organizing food drives in your residence halls, clubs, organizations, or even local churches is a great way to help those in need in our community. If you would like to host a food drive or have any questions or concerns regarding the logistics, please contact Shawnna Gladney, External Donation Manager at shawnnag@live.unc.edu.
By clicking “Join Us!” you can apply to be a volunteer for the food pantry this upcoming year!
Additionally, please print and fill out the Volunteer Agreement form and bring it to the Food Pantry.
DONATE FOOD
The easiest and most direct way to assist us in our mission to fight against hunger is to donate food and groceries, but we will also take kitchen and bathroom necessities that may assist students in need. Food donations will vary and every contribution is valued, but we do not take products that are perishable (ie. fresh fruits and veggies), packaged in glass containers, or already opened.
